Learn and practice inshore fishing skills in one afternoon! Classes are on Saturday 12:30 – 5 pm. Sunday is optional Fishing Only.

Educational classes are held on Saturday at the Greater Pine Island Elks Lodge about 15 minutes East of Matlacha. There are no classes held on Sunday but you can sign up for optional fishing at charter rates.
If you’re tight on time this event is for you! In one afternoon you get to learn shallow water fishing from speakers, plus have precious one-on-one time at the skill tables with experienced captains! Knot tying, casting and more! You do not need to bring any fishing equipment, we cover that!

Matlacha (Pine Island Area) – where inshore fishing is king!
Matlacha (pronounced Mat-La-SHA) means waist deep in American Indian, where the surrounding waters are shallow and hold redfish, snook, trout, snapper and more. It is quaint and resembles old Key West. It a tiny island in the Pine Island area, just off the coast of Ft. Myers where it gets really pretty! This is an awesome place to learn and go fishing inshore, where waters are calm and you are near land!

Social Angler (ONLY for those who have been to LLGF before) – $35. Does not include the educational day and hands-on skill practice. To get one -on-one time with these captains during the skill practice would normally cost hundreds of $. For that you need to sign up with the full registration. This option is for those who just want to attend the social event and fish with charter captains on Sunday.
Sunday is fishing on your own or with guides, with no scheduled educational events. If you want to fish on Sunday there are guided fishing rates below, additional/optional.
If you’re used to the typical weekend fishing university, be ready for some jam packed hours of learning in only a few hours.
March 11: Event is approx four and a half hours packed with fishing information and hands-on practice, starting at 12:30 PM. No need to wake at the break of dawn.
Followed by networking.
It’s all about learning to fish and meeting others who love the outdoors.
Speakers on inshore – the acclaimed Jon Fetter – and brief intro to kayak fishing.
Learn about conservation, fish habits and how to dehook fish without touching them!
Learn equipment and tackle to use. Where and when to find fish, then what to do.
Hands-on Skills! This is why this program is so special! You will have a couple hours to work with guides one-on-one in small groups for knot tying, lure usage, spin casting (no hooks), fly casting, net casting, kayak fishing info and more! Due to facility restrictions, hands-on trailer backing may not be possible.
Sunday March 12 Optional – no classes or meetings at the facility. Optional Fishing on your own or with independent guides. This is an elective/optional.
On Sunday you are welcome to enjoy fishing on your own or with a independently operated charter boat and guide. Fishing in this area is typically near shore, mangroves and beaches!
Fish in this area include redfish, snook, trout, tarpon, snapper, grouper, flounder and who knows what else! Rod, reel, lures and bait if the captain opts for it, provided by the charter guide. Fishing license may be provided by some of the boats but some may require fishing license. Fishing license required for kayak fishing with independent outfitter.
Fishing Suggestions (note: all fishing is limited availability. Various suggested charter rates below are per person.
Suggested Independent Guide’s Rates for this area of Florida:
$185 Bay Flats boat with guide. These usually take 2-4 per boat but mostly 2. Suggested time is 8 to noon. Fishing equipment included. In most cases the fishing license is included.
$135 Pontoon/Deck boat category with guide. Boats take 4-6, Fishing equipment included. Suggested time is 8 to noon. Please note all boats are different. Fishing license will be required.
The two options above are small boats – most boats this size do not have bathrooms.
$125 Kayak fishing with guide provided by a kayak outfitter including kayak and fishing equipment. Suggested time is 8:30-12:30 Approx. 4-5 people per group with a guide. Your participation includes a guide who can help you. You will need to get a fishing license.
$49 Large Pontoon Boat you can reserve on your own AFTER you register for the event. This is about a half hour drive from the Matlacha. $49 plus tax includes, bait, mate and fishing tackle – recommended tip is 15-20% in addition. Limited availability. This is a pontoon boat that holds 20 people and is open to the public too so it is best to book directly with them asap. Their info and location will be provide upon your registration. It is possible they cover your fishing license so ask them. This is an unsupervised trip, you are responsible for finding the location and getting yourself there. Be advised they have a minimum number requirement to go so sign up as early as you can to let this boat go out!
15-20% gratuity is typically additional on ALL OPTIONAL FISHING TRIPS – bring cash for this!
NOTE Sign up fast as this is busy season and we need to book boats ASAP or they will take other charters.
Note: Suggested Fishing rates are based on full boats. If your choice is not available we will notify you. As of it gets close we recommend you put a second or third choice in the SPECIAL NOTES section if you are flexible as most fishing choices are wait listed until the vessel is full. Fishing is not guaranteed and if your fishing choice and second/third choice does not become available you will be refunded the fishing charter fee.

Camping: There is a KOA campground in Pine Island that has cottages. There is also an RV park in Matlacha. We do not know availability or minimum stay requirements so you will have to Google the info and contact them.
