BUCKEYE GIRL AND FLATS CAT WIN “KICKBACK IN THE KEYS!”® TOURNAMENT IN KEY LARGO

07/06 — A husband and wife team aboard the Buckeye Girl landed First Place Offshore Division at the “Kickback in the Keys” tournament hosted by “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!”® (LLGF) at the Holiday Inn, Key Largo, FL July 8-9. A 24.5 lb. dolphin caught by Nancy Saxe, Lake Worth, FL, clinched the award for the boat. First Place Inshore Division went to Flats Cat with an 8 oz. mangrove snapper caught by Joyce Nelson, Coconut Grove, FL. Other notables during the fishing event were at 13 lb. mutton snapper caught by Pat Goudy, Naples, FL aboard the Fantastic II. Fish caught or released during the tournament included several dolphin and yellowtail snapper.

LLGF Founder, Betty Bauman, commented, "This event made it possible for novices as well as out of town travelers to compete in a fun fishing tournament, even if they do not have a boat. Women, some of which brought male guests, could fish from our charters or bring a boat if they wished."

The event began on Saturday, July 8 with a "Kickback Party" offering networking and a presentation on dolphin lifestyles by Michelle Owen of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. On Sunday, July 9, participants went fishing and competed for awards. Registration for the Kickback Party and tournament was $49.

Winner Joyce Nelson added, "I owe it all to "Ladies, Let's Go Fishing!" At a seminar, they taught me everything I needed to know - enough to win a tournament!"

LLGF also offers full weekend seminars with classes, hands-on skill station practice, social functions, fishing excursions and a fillet class in the Florida locations. Those who missed this event will have the opportunity to attend seminars in Sarasota, Aug. 18-20 or Islamorada, Oct. 13-15. A fly fishing seminar will be held in Colorado Sept. 8-10. Special events are held in Alaska and Costa Rica. Featured on NBC’s Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and Inside Edition, the series is supported by the FWC through the Sport Fish Restoration Program and by partners such as Mercury Outboards, Bass Pro Shops, Ranger, BoatU.S. Marine Insurance, Gulfstream Int’l Airlines, Lowrance, Shakespeare Fishing Tackle and Florida Keys and Key West.
